Trippin' On Acid

After all my PR and now with 2 times listening fully through, I can give you a review of the magnificent album Acid Tongue by Jenny Lewis. With her first solo record with the Watson Twins being my favorite CD of ALL TIME, she set the bar pretty high for her sophomore album. Its less girly and more fast paced than Rabbit Fur Coat, but still has the same timeless sound and I think Jenny's voice gets better with each album she records on. And now for an in depth profile of each song:

1. Black Sand: nice build up to the rest of the album, I've never heard her do falsetto either, I don't think

2. Pretty Bird: sly and seductive

3. The Next Messiah: an epic song! sort of like several songs all meshed into one but it works. sounds like a great festival song, if that makes sense?

4. Bad Man's World: very 70's Stevie Nicks, love the echo women's chorus in the back ground

5. Acid Tongue: My favorite on the album - I am singing it all the time. Raw and enchanting - I am just in love with it! IF ANYTHING DOWNLOAD THIS!

6. See Fernando: little country, little 60's vintage - fun song

7. Godspeed: good breakup song, but hopeful at the same time - I like very much!

8. Carpetbaggers: upbeat, lil'country twang of course

9. Trying My Best To Love You: good ol' southern summer song sound to it :) can see this in a show or movie during a breakup scene

10. Jack Killed Mom: sexy, good old rock and roll

11. Sing A Song For Them: great! can see this at and end of a movie, its quite magical

12. Pelican Bay (only on itunes): repetitive but cool and swampy

Autumn Fallin' From Trees

Oh YES!!! Fall is here! My Favorite Season of all - the crisp weather, pretty colored leaves, and all the fun holidays. I thought I would be writing this post in 90 degree southern weather, but surprisingly it has felt a LOT cooler these past few days - I think I might even be able to wear pants and not burn up or perhaps curl my hair without it turning to frizz! 5 months of summer weather is just too long! Monday marks the first official day of Fall and the start of a great week: Tuesday Jenny Lewis' New CD ACID TONGUE comes out, Wednesday its outdoor movie night and happens to be one of my favorite movies (Breakfast at Tiffany's), and Thursday is Free Ice Cream at Coldstone (go check it out) and THE OFFICE and UGLY BETTY!!!!!!! hmmmm.... this is going to be a good Fall!

Here is the Fall Playlist, songs that have to do with Autumn and songs that have that harvesty-crunching leaves feel to them:

Melodies & Desires

Don't we all purchase those certain things, that, yes we may never find the chance to wear them, but we buy them anyways so we can look at them? Headwear (hats, fun crazy headbands) are my guilty purchases. Its not that I never wear them, I do, its just I cant wear a vintage feathery cocktail hat everyday... although I wish I could. I don't know when people stopped wearing hats day to day. When you look at old movies or TV shows, a hat was as common of an accessory as earrings. Recently I came across a website called ban.do. Two LA stylists created this wonderful little online store where they sell one of a kind headpieces. Clicking through all the designs I had a hard time choosing my favorites to feature on Modern Marie (as you can tell, I favored most all of them). Some are very simple, some more ornate, but the possibilities on where and when to wear these are endless: a costume party, for cocktails, a substitute for a birthday hat, the feather ones with a tank and jeans (a la Kenley from Project Runway), when you want to be a fairy, on your wedding! They will custom make them especially for you too, what ever colors you want, etc. They are just so whimsical and pixie like I had to share with you, plus doesn't it look like something Marie Antoinette would have worn with one of her beautiful dresses?

and did I mention that each one comes with a little haiku that represents the hairpiece?

I Lykke Like

Call it an obsession. You're probably tired of me talking and talking about these awesome Swedish blogger girls, but lets face it -they're so freaking cool! And it seems as though I'm not the only one who is obsessed...

Its seems that one of my favorite up and coming designers, Jenni Kayne, shares my infatuation with Moderniteter and LisaPlace. Her Spring/Summer 09 models displayed her floral chiffon, denim and 90's silhouettes, and all were of course topped off with that classic Swedish girl ballerina bun.

which brings me to Lykke Li...

I've been hearing a lot about this ultra-cool, Swedish girl singer in the past few months, but waited till her full album debuted in the US. Coiffed with "the bun" and all, this girl can make music as good as she can dress (meaning: REALLY GOOD). Her album Youth Novels is a must listen for fans of Imogen Heap, Bjork, and Zero 7. I wouldn't classify it as techno (because I am NOT a fan), but the music is sort of dancey and futuristic and tribal all at the same time. Give some of her music a listen on my bear music player - you will be pleasantly delighted and will want to start dancing in your rollie chair.

this single cover looks a little like Marie Antoinette, no?

***check out some Lykke Li music videos below as well as a how-to done by the girls of Moderniteter on how to make "the Swedish bun".
